Join us in supporting the voices of emerging and established Native American writers in the fields of prose, poetry and journalism
Your donation will help fund our inaugural year of the Don and Wyn Berry Memorial Writers Residency. Writers participating in the Skookum Wawa Residency will be inspired by taking part in the natural systems at Cascade Head that are raw, beautiful and “other than human”… Having space and time to create meaningful pieces of writing that speak to the most compelling cultural, social and environmental topics of our times as expressed by first peoples, which would then be shared with the public in any way that the writer and residency team deem appropriate.
Individual writers will be selected through an application process and will come twice a year for the months spanning the Spring and Autumnal equinoxes.
Donations like yours help us in providing a sanctuary of space and time in one of the world’s most beautiful places, for this generation of Native American voices. Your gift to the residency will help fund a stipend, lodging, food and any travel expenses for each resident.
A portion of these expenses will be covered by royalties from Don’s books (which are all still in print) but the balance will come from donations from the Berry family, and any individuals or foundations that would like to join them in this important effort.
It has been our pleasure to found this writers residency in honor of two extraordinary human beings, Don and Wyn Berry, who were an influential couple in the culture of the Pacific NW from the 1950’s through the 1970’s.
Don’s books were groundbreaking in their description of first contact between Europeans and Native Peoples of the west.

Skookum Wawa is a collaborative program with the Cascade Head Biosphere Collaborative who is acting as their fiscal sponsor,so all donations will be made to them and transferred directly to meet the residencies expenses.
